Unbounded dependencies arise in questions and relative clauses, among other constructions, in the relation between the fronted wh-phrase and the grammatical function that this phrase bears within its clause. In a sentence like “what book are you reading?”, the phrase “what book” occupies a special fronted position, but is at the same time the object of the verb “reading” and would normally be expected to appear immediately following the verb, were it not because it is the question phrase in an interrogative sentence. The relation between the fronted phrase and its grammatical function can cross an unlimited number of clause boundaries, which accounts for the name “unbounded dependency”. The framework of LFG has relatively few works devoted to this topic and the proposed volume would be the first collection of papers exclusively devoted to the treatment of unbounded dependencies within LFG.
